Harvard - Stanford - Dinner

07.06.2016 Harvard Stanford Dinner, Stephen Hinton from Stanford University speaks about Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera - a Crossover Work of Art about Art

Maria Budig and Jad Rifka, students from Berlin Metropolitan School and Harvard Book Price winner were invited to the dinner and describe their experience as follows:

„ “Many have tried to imitate it. No one has succeeded.” - Harold Prince on Brecht's Threepenny Opera

As the winners of this year's Harvard Book Prize, we got the honour to be joining one of the Harvard-Stanford-Dinners that stood under the topic of Brecht's and Weill's Threepenny Opera. Mr Stephen Hinton who is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Stanford University gave a short lecture on the subject “Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera – a Crossover Work of Art about Art”. We were especially impressed by his excellent comparison of the Opera to Mozart's Magic Flute which made us look at Brecht's “play with music” under a completely different light.
Harold Prince was right with what he said. The Threepenny Opera is a unique play which no one will ever be able to imitate because of both, the message it wants to bring across and because of the beautiful songs.
It was not only the lecture that made us enjoy the dinner so much – over the course of the evening, we were able to engage in interesting conversations, meet wonderful people with remarkable personalities and have heated discussions on currently relevant topics.
We want to thank the Harvard and Stanford Alumni Club for their kind invitation to the dinner and this great evening.“
